Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

General Information

  1. Under Indian law, Persons of Indian Origin, who have acquired foreign citizenship, are required to surrender their Indian passports to Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC), immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship.
  2. The Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, does not provide for dual citizenship. Holding Indian passport / acquiring Indian passport / travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967, and attracts penalties.
  3. In view of these provisions, Persons of Indian Origin, intending to apply for OCI Cards, should first complete the process of surrender of their Indian passports and then apply for these services.
  4. Persons of Indian Origin applying for Indian visa for the first time after acquiring foreign nationality are required to first renounce / surrender their Indian passports.
  5. Note : According to Section 8(2) of the Citizenship Act 1955, where a person ceases to be a citizen of India, every minor child of that person shall thereupon cease to be a citizen of India. Provided that any such child may, within one year after attaining full age, make a declaration [in the prescribed form and manner] that he wishes to resume Indian citizenship and shall thereupon again become a citizen of India.

 

Note: Old passport shall be cancelled by the Embassy and cannot be used for travel once application for reissue is accepted.

Follow the below steps in order to apply

A) For adults

  1. Create an account (Register yourself) on Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. Click Here to register.
  2. Fill the online application form on Govt of India's web portal (Indian Citizenship Online Portal). Please note that the form can be filled only online, and no further modifications are possible. Thus, filing of wrong and incorrect detail may cause rejection / cancellation of application at any stage.
  3. Book your appointment online at Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. You can choose a convenient date and time to visit the Alankit ICAC for your application submission. Click Here to book your appointment online.
  4. Ensure that you have all documents ready, exactly as per the "Documents Checklist" section.
  5. Visit the Alankit ICAC, as per your jurisdiction. The address and location of the ICAC will be clearly mentioned in the appontment letter. 
  6. Kindly ensure you reach the ICAC 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. 
  7. Submit your application and deposit your fees at Alankit ICAC. You can check the fee for this application under the "Fee Details" section. 
  8. Your application submission process is now complete! You can avail our Courier service to get your processed document delivered to your doorstep!
  9. While your application is in process, you can track your application to know the current stage of your application process. Click Here to track your application online. 
  10. Please Note:
    • Applicant needs to submit a copy (FORM XXII) in PDF format at Alankit ICAC in person. Applicant's details must be vouched by another Indian national on Form XXII who is not a family member of the applicant. Copy of witness’ passport must be provided and presence of witness is not mandatory.
    • Signing of form XXII and submission of the application must be done in person at Alankit ICAC
    • In case applicant’s last Indian passport is with German authorities, the applicant should contact the concerned German authorities to provide the applicant with their passport. If the same had been forwarded to the Embassy or an Indian Consulate, the respective Indian Embassy / Consulate should be contacted to get back the last Indian passport. The Applicant has to submit physical copy of their passport along with the above mentioned two documents.

B) For Minors

  1. Create an account (Register yourself) on Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. Click Here to register.
  2. Apply for Surrender of Indian Passport on Govt. of India's Portal (Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates) and take a printout of the completed application. Paste two photographs on the printed form and sign where indicated.
  3. Please print and fill the from XXII (Click Here), Parental Authorization for Minors (Click Here) and Particulars form (Click Here). Note that the Form should be signed by a witness who is NOT applicant but another Indian national.
  4. Book your appointment online at Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. You can choose a convenient date and time to visit the Alankit ICAC for your application submission. Click Here to book your appointment online.

Renunciation of Indian Citizenship (Based on the Citizenship Gurantee Letter) - Applicable for Adults
  • Printed copy of the duly filled online application form at https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/Renounce (Applicant should sign the application form's first page in front of the ICAC Counter Staff. On the second page of the application form, applicant have to obtain the signature of the person vouching for the correctness of your details (This should before visiting to the ICAC for submission of the application). The person vouching the correctness of the application must be an Indian citizen).
  • Original current Indian Passport along with the self -attested photocopies of the first and last pages (personal information pages) of the current and previous Indian passport of the applicant.
  • Self-attested photocopy of proof of Current address in Germany (City Registration/ Meldebesatigung / Anmeldung ) of the applicant.
  • Self-attested photocopy of valid German Visa / Aufenthaltstitel (Residence Permit) of the applicant.
  • Self-attested photocopy of the Citizenship Guarantee Letter (Einbürgerungszusicherung)
  • Self-attested photocopy of the valid Indian passport of the person who are vouching the correctness of the application.
  • Proof of the payment of the applicable fee (if made through Bank Transfer).

NOTE:- If the last Indian passport is not available with the applicant, he/she must obtain a letter from the concerned German authority, to whom they had submitted their passport, stating the location of the passport. This letter should be obtained before submitting the application at the ICAC and submit a copy of this along with the application in place of original passport.

Fees Details

Note: If fingerprint or facial biometrics, or both, are not required for the selected service, the corresponding biometric charges for these services will be deducted from the total fees payable by the applicant.

A) Renunciation of Indian Citizenship / Surrender of Indian Passport for Applicants above 18 years.

  1. Where can I apply for Renunciation of Indian Citizenship?
    • Applicant needs to apply online on Govt of India's web portal (Indian Citizenship Online Portal). Click Here to access the web portal. 
  2. What all documents are required for Renunciation of Indian Citizenship?
    • Following documents are required to submitted along with the application form:
      • Form 22. Click Here to download the form.
      • Copy of first and last pages of current Indian Passport
      • Indian Passport in original (even when expired)
      • Copy of City Registration / Anmeldung
      • Copy of Foreign Nationality Certificate
      • Copy of Foreign Passport

      • Documents in Original of the above stated must be presented during the verification process
      • Copies of nationality certificate / passport other than German nationality, must be apostilled accordingly before submitting the documents at Alankit ICAC
  3. What is the fees and how can I pay?
    • 94.53 Euros. Applicant can pay in cash or by card at Alankit ICAC.
  4. What is the criteria of uploading documents?
    • Documents mentioned above should be scanned and uploaded in PDF format. Each PDF document should not exceed size more than 1mb.
  5. What is the criteria of uploading image?
    • Image dimension of photograph should be 5x5 cm. Ensure that the scanned image should not exceed more than 50kb and should be in JPG format only.
  6. How much is the processing time of the application?
    • Processing of the application may take minimum 10-12 weeks (starting from date of receipt of complete application). Certificate can only be issued after getting security clearances in the system from several Indian agencies. Applicants are requested to refrain from making status enquiries for 12 weeks after successful submission of documents and payment of fee. Applicants are advised to use the "Track Application" page to know the current status of the application process.
  7. Can I track the status of my application on Indian Government's Portal?


B) Surrender of Indian Passport / Renunciation of Indian Citizenship for Applicants less than 18 years.

  1. Where can I apply for Renunciation of Indian Citizenship?
    • Applicant needs to apply online on Govt of India's web portal (Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates). Click Here to access the web portal. 
  2. After acquiring foreign nationality when do I need to surrender my passport?
    • After obtaining foreign nationality the applicant needs to surrender his / her Passport within 3 years. Also note that you cannot travel on the Indian passport after acquiring foreign passport.
  3. What documents do I need to provide along with the application?
    • Following documents are required to submitted along with the application form:

  4. My passport has been taken by the German authorities while processing my German passport. What is the procedure for getting the surrender certificate now?
    • Applicant needs to submit his / her application at Alankit ICAC mentioning that his / her passport was deposited with the German authorities. Please follow up with the concerned German authority to ensure that the passport is sent to the Embassy of India / Consulate General of India. The surrender process can start only after the Indian passport of the applicant is received by the Embassy of India / Consulate General of India.
  5. Whose details needs to be filled in Particulars Form?
    • The Particulars Form is not to be signed by the applicant but by another Indian national who can verify the identity of the applicant (should not be a family member of the applicant).
  6. How do I submit my application?
    • Applicant can personally submit the application at Alankit ICAC (as per correct jurisdiction). Prior appointment is mandatory. Refer to "How to Apply" section for further details.
  7. What is the fees and how can I pay?
    • 94.53 Euros. Applicant can pay in cash or by card at Alankit ICAC.
  8. What if I have passport from different country?
    • Applicant needs to get it apostiled along with nationality certificate issued by the authorities of concerned country.
