Student Visa

Student Visa ('S' Visa)

Student visa is applicable to bonafide students to pursue on-campus, full time (structured) courses at educational institutions / university or technological institute, take part in an academic exchange program duly recognized by statutory regulatory body and have acquired statutory authorization to conduct the course(s) complying with GST regulations for regular studies at recognized institutions in India and to persons going for studying Yoga, Vedic Culture, Indian systems of dance / music / Buddhist studies, etc., professors or scholars intending to conduct research work in India and applicants intending to pursue internship in an Indian Company / Educational Institution / NGO, Foreign Missions / Posts and foreign government organizations in India.

Student visa is valid for the period of study up to a maximum period of five years.

Sub Categories of Student Visa:

  1. S-1: For higher education (including in South Asian University and Nalanda University), provisional student visa, for short term courses and those coming under Student Exchange Programme
  2. S-2: For school education
  3. S-3: For studies in Yoga, Vedic culture and Indian systems of Music and Dance and Buddhist studies
  4. S-4: For Theological studies and for Missionary students
  5. S-5: For Research scholar, visiting Research faculty, research scholar on bilateral exchange programme, members of Botanical, Scientific, Anthropological, etc. expeditions
  6. S-6: For those coming for internship in India (including those coming under French VIE programme)
  7. S-1X/S-3X/S-5X: For dependents of those coming under S-1 and S-3 and S-5 visas.

Registration with FRRO / FRO having jurisdiction over the place where the foreigner intends to stay is required within 14 days from the date of arrival, if visa is issued for more than 6 months.

Student (S-6) visa is also granted to those intending to pursue internship in Indian companies / educational institutions / NGOs / foreign Missions or Posts in India / foreign Government organisations sponsoring the foreign national / Indian and foreign media organizations valid up to a period of one year.

S-6 Visa will be granted (a) at any time during the course of study, or (b) after completion of graduation / post graduation but the gap between completion of graduation / post graduation and the commencement of the internship should not be more than two years.

In case the internship is with a Company, the internee should draw a minimum remuneration of INR 3,60,000 per annum. There will be no minimum salary limit in the case of internship in educational institutions and NGOs. Earnings from internship with Indian Companies / Educational Institutions / NGOs will be subject to the Indian Income Tax regulations. Under no circumstances, the intern will be allowed to take up employment in India immediately after completion of the internship programme.

Student Visa is also granted for Research work up to a maximum period of three years.

Student Visa can also be issued to foreign professors, teachers and scholars who are invited as visiting faculty on an invitation from a Central educational institution or publicly funded State University.

Grant of Student Visa to the members of Botanical, Scientific, Anthropological etc., expedition would be subject to approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The applicants are advised to apply at least four months in advance, giving full information on the following points:

  1. Name, nationality and bio-data of the persons forming the party
  2. The areas which the party desires to visit in India
  3. The purpose of the expedition
  4. The proposed duration of stay in India
  5. Details of the manner in which the expedition is proposed to be financed
  6. If any foreign organization is sponsoring the expedition, full background material about the sponsor
  7. The name of the Indian collaborator / institution, if any, connected with the organization of the expedition
Members of the expedition may be required to take with them a liaison officer deputed by the agency concerned of the Government of India. Approval of the designated agency of the Government of India will also be necessary to take out of India any specimens collected during the expedition as per conditions prescribed by the Ministry of Science & Technology and other agencies concerned.
Such expeditions will NOT be permitted to visit any protected, restricted or tribal area without the specific permission of the Ministry of Home Affairs.


Important points to be noted during visa application:

  1. When applying for an Indian visa, applicants are requested to disclose details of all passports (current / old) held by them. Failure to do so may result in rejection of their applications.
  2. Applicants are requested to ensure details entered on the Visa application form must be exactly as in the Passport or else the visa application will be rejected.
  3. When applying for a visa, the passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months or more. The passport must have at least three blank pages and should not be mutilated / damaged / tampered in any manner.
  4. Suppression of facts and information will not only result in delay or denial of visa applied for but may debar the applicant from applying under this system in future.
  5. Visa processing fees are not refundable. Fee should be deposited only after ascertaining that all correct and relevant details are entered in the application form.
  6. The acceptance of a visa application does not automatically guarantee grant of a visa. The visa application may be modified or refused by the Indian Embassy / Consulate at their discretion. Decision of the Embassy / Consulate on the matter shall be final.
  7. The duration and number of entries granted to the applicant will be solely at the discretion of Embassy / Consulate. No claims and correspondences shall be entertained in this regard.
  8. Visa is valid from the date of issue and not from the date of travel.
  9. It is strongly advised that applicants do not make any travel arrangements before obtaining an Indian visa. The Embassy of India or its Consulates cannot, under any circumstance, be held responsible for visa not issued in time.
  10. All Visa applicants including those applying for multiple entry Tourist and Business Visas are advised to give their biometrics at the time of submission of their applications.
  11. In case of a Minor child, a consent letter signed by both parents / if one parent, a copy of custody letter from local court is needed.
  12. Know your correct jurisdiction before applying, and ensure you apply at the correct Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC). For more details, refer to the "How to Apply" section or "Jurisdiction" section.
  13. Applicants coming to the Alankit ICAC for application submission must have a prior appointment, and must visit Alankit ICAC at the designated date and time only, as per the appointment letter. Applicants coming in without an appointment will not be entertained.
  14. Fees submission at Alankit ICAC can be made through cash.
  15. Consular surcharge of EUR 3 shall be levied on all visa services (except Gratis cases) and must be paid along with visa fee and Alankit service fee, as specified in the "Fees Details" section.
  16. Applicants must ensure that they have all the supporting documents, as mentioned in the "Documents Checklist" section. Incomplete applications will not be accepted at Alankit ICAC.


Advisory:

  1. For travel to India a valid visa along with passport is mandatory. Only categories exempted under bilateral arrangements may not need a visa. For persons of Indian origin (all categories), OCI card is mandatory.
  2. Foreigners can visit restricted / prohibited areas only after getting a valid permit as visa alone is not enough to visit such places.

  5. Ensure that you select the appropriate option for the dropdown "Indian Mission/Office" as per your correct jurisdiction. To know your jurisdiction, refer to the "Jurisdiction" section.
  6. Print and sign your application.  
  7. Book your appointment online at Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. You can choose a convenient date and time to visit the Alankit ICAC for your application submission. Click Here to book your appointment online.  
  8. Ensure that you have your passport, photographs and all other supporting documents, exactly as per the "Documents Checklist" section. 
  9. Visit the Alankit ICAC, as per your jurisdiction. The address and location of the ICAC will be clearly mentioned in the appontment letter.

  2. Original Passport with more than six months validity as on date of expected date of journey and 2 blank pages along with a photocopy of the personal information page(s).

  4. Self-attested photocopy of Proof of Current address in Germany (City Registration/ Meldebesatigung / Anmeldung / personalauweis) of the applicant.
  5. Under Family details:The applicant must specify the previous nationality of both the parents. Applicant should not leave that blank.
  6. Photograph should be mandatorily uploaded before submitting the online application form.
  7. Additional Form (Download Form) & Documents for Passport holders other than German nationals including proof of valid German Residence Permit / Visa:
    • Letter of admission from a recognised Indian educational institution with duration of the course.
    • Invitation letter from the company/organization/agency based in India sponsoring the applicant for the internship programme.
    • A letter from the concerned institute in Germany.
    • Proof of registration of the company/organisation in India.
    • A letter of financial support/ Bank statement from parent/guardian.
    • No objection letter from Parents to study abroad for applicants below 18 years(Minor applicant), letter from the Boarding School confirming boarding facility or proof of parent having valid work visa.

    • For Higher Education;
      • Letter of admission from a recognised Indian educational institution with duration of the course.
      • A letter of financial support / bank statement from parent / guardian.
      • No objection letter from parents along with the passport copies of parents and Birth Certificate of the applicant to study abroad for applicants below 18 years.
    • For School Education:
      • Letter of admission from a recognized Indian educational institution with duration of the course.
      • A letter of financial support / bank statement from parent / guardian.
      • No objection letter from parents along with the passport copies of parents and Birth Certificate of the applicant to study abroad for applicants below 18 years.
      • If the child is minor and the education if for one year or more, the application must be supported by a contract for boarding facility with authentic school in India or the proof of legal custodian/guardian in India.

      • No objection letter from parents along with the passport copies of parents and Birth Certificate of the applicant to study abroad for applicants below 18 years.
      • If the child is minor and the education if for one year or more, the application must be supported by a contract for boarding facility with authentic school in India or the proof of legal custodian/guardian in India.
    • For Research Work;
      • Original Invitation Letter from the Indian institution.
      • Duly filled APPENDIX XVll(A) https://indianembassyberlin.gov.in/pdf/Scan1form_june21_2024.pdf with the stamp and seal of the inviting institute in India.
      • In cases which involve research on subjects related to the foreigner’s own country, the research scholar will be required to furnish a brief synopsis of the research proposal in about 150 words and giving full justification (including the benefit he / she would get) for doing the research in India.
    • For those coming for internship in India (including those coming under French VIE programme);
      • A copy of the Internship Contract including the remuneration.
      • Invitation letter from the Indian Institution/organization.

Note: Grant of Intern visa for those intending to pursue internship in NGOs is takes time. Applicant is advised to apply for the visa well in advance atleast 02 bofore 02 months of desired visit.

Important Advisory/Points

  • Journalist travelling to India for any purpose may apply for Journalist Visa only.
  • Tourist Visa applicants travelling by Ship, need mandatorily biometrics.

  • All foreigner intending to visit India are advised to carry Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate if coming from Yellow Fever endemic countries or with history of travel to Yellow Fever endemic countries in the last 6 days. Any Person (excluding infants below the age of six months) arriving by air or sea or land without a certificate of vaccination is to be detained in isolation for a period of 6 days.
  • All foreigners intending to visit in Restricted/Protected areas are advised to apply for the permission at https://indianfrro.gov.in/eservices as only the visa and passport are not sufficient to travel in these areas. FAQ's for Student Visa

  1. Can foreign students study in India?
    • Yes, they can.
  2. Can foreign students come on Tourist Visa to explore admission in some courses/institutes and get Student Visa while in India?
    • No. In order to enable the foreign students to explore various options to study in India, he/she can apply for provisional Student Visa of 6 months duration and once he / she gets the confirmed admission while in India, he / she can apply for a Student Visa to the local FRRO / FRO along with necessary documentary evidences of
      confirmed admission, financial standing etc.
  3. What is the duration of Student Visa?
    • Student Visa can be of 5 years or for the duration of the course whichever is earlier.
  4. What are the formalities that foreign students should do on arrival?
    • Foreign students holding Student Visa of more than 180 days are required to register himself / herself with the local FRRO / FRO within 14 days of arrival.
  5. Is there any restriction on the number of courses that a foreign student can pursue?
    • No. However, the overall band of the Student Visa regime cannot exceed more than 5 years.
  6. Can a foreign student change the course or institute or both while in India?
    • Yes, but with the permission of the local FRRO / FRO and the Institute(s) concerned and subject to no adverse activity.
  7. How to apply for a student visa?
    • Student visas are issued for the duration of the course for those foreign national students who want to pursue regular academic courses in India in any recognized institution. Duly signed applications are to be submitted along with a Letter of admission from a recognized Indian educational institution with duration of the course, Letter of recommendation for issuance of Student Visa to the foreign national students, Proof of Payment of school / college Fees, and one recent passport size photograph. Visa officer may ask for additional documents, if required, depending on the specific circumstances of the applicant.
  8. What is the procedure to apply for Intern Visa for a student to do internship in a company in India? What are the documents required??
    • The applicant needs to apply online for a Regular visa (relevant category - Student Visa, Intern Visa (S-6) - for foreigners intending to pursue Internship in Indian Companies) at the Indian Government's Visa Portal and thereafter, a printout of the application form and the fees, may be submitted in person at Alankit ICAC (as per your correct jurisdiction) with prior appointment, alongwith requisite documents. The period of the Visa is to be restricted to the duration of the internship programme or one year, whichever is less. Moreover, The Intern Visa will be granted during or immediately after completion of Graduation / Post Graduation but the gap between the completion of Graduation / Post Graduation and the commencement of the internship should not be more than one year. Application Form filling service is available at Alankit ICAC as an optional service, with applicable fees, at approved rates and applicants may approach the ICAC (with prior appointment) if they are facing any issues.
